Gonville Academy is proud to have been awarded the School Games Gold Sports Mark, for its achievements in competitive sport. We have two excellent, dedicated PE coaches at Gonville, who enable our students to Strive for Excellence in sports. We are the current Croydon champions for girls’ long jump, and for the second year running were the STEP Academy Trust football champions.
Gonville Academy is delighted to have received the Investors in People Award for the third time. This prestigious award demonstrates that Gonville is committed to realising the potential of its staff.
The report recognised our efforts in building an effective new leadership team, focused on and committed to continuing to improve the school. The assessment team were also impressed by how our core values are embedded and underpin all the work we do: Passion, Urgency, Positivity, Aspiration and Commitment. The positive relationships between staff and pupils were highlighted, along with the reward systems in place to ensure that children feel that they are valued.
Teamwork was also highlighted as a strength, with the assessor commenting on our “excellent teamwork and supportive practices including mentoring and coaching.” We are very proud to have received this award, and look forward to continuing to strive for excellence together.
During the evening of Monday 30th June, Year 5 students performed at Fairfield Halls as part of the 7th We Sing U Sing Summer Song. Always an inspirational event, it was wonderful to see the children singing and dancing on stage along with schools from all over Croydon. The children were particularly excited to be joined on stage by Jahmene Douglas, of X-Factor fame. A huge thank you to all the parents who supported the event, and to John Fisher and his team for all their hard work and dedication.
On Thursday 19th June, Gonville Academy’s junior athletics team represented the school at the Croydon Athletics Championship. 19 children represented the school, with 13 children reaching the final in their events. A huge congratulations to all the students who took part, and showed real passion and enthusiasm during the events. Out of more than 70 schools participating, Gonville students placed 2nd in the Y6 girls’ long jump, 3rd in the boys’ relay, 4th in the Y6 boys’ sprint and 5th in the Y5 girls’ sprint.
Gonville Academy has retained its status as a Level 2 Rights Respecting School, gaining the UNICEF Level 2 Award for the second time. The assessors were very impressed with the children’s awareness of their rights, and felt parents and carers were very well informed. The report found that the right to an education was a key focus of the school, and that children were clear about how to support the rights of others to learn. A huge thank you goes to Miss Taylor (Gonville’s Assistant Headteacher) and our Rights Respecting School Champions for leading the assessment day.
